Cartesi Ecosystem Recap — May 2023

Tech and Community updates from across the Cartesi Ecosystem

Exciting changes are happening across the Cartesi ecosystem as we make major moves across all areas — and this monthly ecosystem recap is one of them! In April we gave a glimpse into the community’s march towards Mainnet as well as a peek at some of the new initiatives bubbling in the pipeline. Jumping forward to now, where are we at? Let’s take a look 👀

Tech Updates

Research & Design

Cartesi Rollups are closer than ever to being Mainnet-ready! But did you know you don’t have to wait for our monthly updates to see what’s going on? Now you can check in bi-weekly on Discord (Units-Updates) to see what’s new as well as take a look in real-time at current discussions shaping the development of Cartesi tech (R&D Discussions).

Still prefer a summary of the month’s developments? We’ve got you covered:

  • The new Rollups 0.9.0 release bringing all planned features for the MVP is ready! Cartesi’s contributors are now concluding the adaptation of the official examples and updating the documentation for this new release — stay tuned…
  • In parallel, Sunodo development is literally flying! It’s already possible to easily create a Cartesi DApp, and run it locally calling a small number of commands via its CLI tool. Not familiar with Sunodo yet? Check it out and give it a try here.
  • Cartesi Compute 1.3.0, Cartesi’s computational Oracle solution, is ready and its updated documentation will come together with the launch of Rollups 0.9.0.
  • Cartesi’s Research and Design on decentralisation is ongoing — you can follow the discussions via Discord in our dedicated channel for this important topic here.

As one of the first application specific rollup projects in the space, we’re also thrilled to see Honeypot (the first Cartesi-powered DApp to be launched on Mainnet) listed alongside upcoming L2 projects on L2Beat. Alongside generating interest amongst the Web3 developer community to help test and fortify the security of Cartesi Rollups, we’re excited for this to bring greater visibility to Cartesi Rollups tech!

UXBoost identifies user needs, problem areas, and develops solutions through iterative design.

Current focus is on the DevAdvocacy unit:

  • Studying and mapping out the present DevAdvocacy workflow to optimise the core contributor’s experience.
  • Designing the user research plan to conduct the user interview and learn more about the needs and pain points of Cartesi developers’ journey when learning and building on Cartesi.
  • Provided UX mentorship to hackathon projects to guide on how to get ready for product-user fit before moving to the next level.

Community Updates

Discord

Our Discord server is flourishing with activity! From bringing engaging R&D discussions and Layer-2 debates over to public channels, to making it even easier for you to track development within the Cartesi ecosystem, we’re excited to see the Cartesi Discord evolving into an invigorating hub for everything from community collaborations to diverse and stimulating conversations.

Join the Cartesi Development Community Discord Server!

Community Grants Program

It’s not only our Discord server that’s becoming a hive of activity! Over on the Cartesi Governance forum, we’ve seen 7 new proposals submitted, igniting a series of active discussions from contributors within the Cartesi ecosystem (make sure to share your feedback if you haven’t already ✍️).

We also saw a unanimous vote from the community to fund a proposal to build a Solidity library that extends the expressiveness of the Cartesi voucher system! With plenty more opportunities to help shape the Cartesi ecosystem coming up, make sure you’re ready for the next vote by staking your CTSI.

Community Project Repository

Cartesi contributors came together to create an awesome portal, gathering proof of concepts, hackathon projects, and experimental DApps developed with Cartesi Rollups. Come explore the newly launched Rollup Lab website here. Take a look at new and evolving projects within the Cartesi ecosystem, even give them a try, or submit your own project to showcase to the world.

Cartesi Rollups is opening up the design space for decentralized applications and we can’t wait to see this repo grow bigger with sophistically complex and groundbreaking projects.

Ecosystem Growth

To support the Cartesi ecosystem’s Marketing, DevRel, and Growth functions, a grant has also been issued to Serotonin, a Web3 marketing firm and product studio for transformative technologies. With a team of former executives from ConsenSys, Chainlink, and more, we’re

excited to welcome Serotonin as the newest contributor to the Cartesi ecosystem and can’t wait to work together on new strategies to boost Cartesi awareness and adoption.

Events

It’s been a jammed packed month of events, and we have to give special kudos to the contributors working hard to introduce Cartesi to new developer communities across the globe!

First up, a shout out to Lyno and Arthur in Brazil for providing support and mentorship to students of the Intelil hackathon! Dev Advocacy contributor Gabriel sat down with the GitDeun Alliance for an insightful technical AMA, organised by Korean community ambassador, Jay, before heading over to the US to join Ecosystem Growth’s Zach at the Compute Over Data Summit. Zach wrote a brilliant recap, check it out:

💡Food for thought:

About Cartesi

Cartesi is an application-specific rollup execution layer with a Linux runtime. Cartesi Rollups can be deployed as a layer 2 (on top of Ethereum), as a layer 3 (on top of Optimism, Arbitrum, zkEVM chains, etc.), or as sovereign rollups. It opens up the design space for more expressive and computationally intensive blockchain applications.

  • DApps are deployed on their own customizable application-specific rollup chains;
  • DApps don’t compete with each other in Cartesi’s ecosystem for scarce blockspace;
  • Cartesi provides Ethereum or L2’s with orders of magnitude more computational capacity;
  • Developers can code decentralized logic with their favorite libraries, compilers and other time-tested open source components;
  • DApps preserve the strong security guarantees and censorship resistance of the underlying blockchain;
