| Introducing CasperLabs Highway The First Specification for a Provably Live and Secure CBC Casper Protocol In consensus protocol literature, there are two critical security properties: safety and liveness. A protocol is safe if it will not make inconsistent decisions. A protocol is live if it is guaranteed to eventually make a decision. Making proof-of-stake (PoS) both safe and live for a decentralized network isn’t easy. One of the first breakthroughs to address these issues was published in a research paper titled “CBC Casper” by Ethereum Researcher Vlad Zamfir. While this initial research on the correct-by-construction (CBC) Casper family of protocols provided a leading-edge framework to address safety, it did not address liveness. At CasperLabs, we have not only been researching on imminent issues around scalability and energy consumption, but have also been extending on Vlad Zamfir’s existing CBC Casper research to push the boundaries of our industry together. Today, we are very excited to introduce CasperLabs Highway, the first specification for a provably live and safe consensus protocol within the CBC Casper framework. We are releasing the protocol specification free to the community under an open-source license. The draft of the research paper is also available here. Why CasperLabs Highway is Significant Highway extends CBC Casper research in two ways. First, the consensus protocol provides a novel, efficient way of detecting safety at dif...

| Devcon 5: A CasperLabs Retrospective After a week in Osaka full of stimulating technical and philosophical talks, hacking sessions, research announcements, and thought-provoking conversations, the team at CasperLabs has finally settled back into our home times zones. We were humbled to be amongst so many builders of all kinds. We sponsored Devcon5 at the Serenity level to show our commitment to Ethereum and the community and more importantly, to show our progress toward our belief that decentralized, unstoppable applications are keys to unlocking the shared future we want to create. Collaborative forums and open-minded discourse are core to the Ethereum community — and we left with a resounding feeling of acceptance, gratitude, and excitement to push the boundaries of our industry forward together. As Medha, our CTO put it,“We want to help move the ecosystem forward and we can do that by sharing our research with the community. That was our approach and I think the ETH crowd recognized and appreciated that.” We were particularly excited to share progress and research on CBC Casper. In a collaboration between researcher Vlad Zamfir of the Ethereum Foundation and CasperLabs, we announced the availability of the Highway Protocol whitepaper, a specification for a live and safe CBC Casper consensus protocol. Michael Birch, software engineering lead at CasperLabs, hosted a community talk and fielded questions about the initiative. If you missed Michael’s ...
| Vlad Zamfir collaborates with CasperLabs to launch a new decentralized Proof of Stake blockchain… Vlad Zamfir collaborates with CasperLabs to launch a new decentralized Proof of Stake blockchain based on CBC Casper Protocol The esteemed industry researcher collaborates with CasperLabs as CBC Casper Lead Architect, focused on building a market leading protocol for performance, speed, and decentralization NEW YORK, February 22, 2019 — CasperLabs, a Research & Development organization funded by ADAPtive Holdings Ltd., announces its’ collaboration with Vlad Zamfir, who is assuming the function of Lead Consensus Protocol Architect. Vlad is best known in the blockchain space for his work on Ethereum as a researcher in blockchain technology and blockchain governance, where his work will be ongoing. Zamfir said “Blockchain technology has created an opportunity for protocol to solve problems that previously required more reliance on corporations and more trust in authority. The tech is still nascent, and it’s possible that protocols deployed today will not fulfill the promise of blockchain technology. I believe that decentralized, scalable, and secure public “proof-of-stake” consensus protocols that are much more usable and secure than existing blockchains are possible, and will eventually make mining and Nakamoto consensus obsolete. However, I am not sure if the Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchain communities are going to be able to upgrade their protocols. I’m excited that CasperLabs has taken an interest in i...
